"Green apple on the palate Quite complex, long peachy finish "

Hester Creek Chardonnay 2023: A Fresh Take on Okanagan Chardonnay

Chardonnay can be many things.

Rich and buttery. Lean and mineral.

Oaked or unoaked.

The Hester Creek Chardonnay 2023 sits comfortably in the middle, bringing together bright fruit, lively acidity and well-judged oak without letting any one element take over.

Produced in the Golden Mile Bench, this Chardonnay spent 10 months in French oak, giving the wine texture and complexity while preserving its freshness.

At 12.7% alcohol, it is also lighter than many New World Chardonnays, making it surprisingly easy to drink.

The nose is elegant from the first swirl.

There is a gentle buttery note alongside a subtle oily texture that immediately suggests barrel ageing.

Layers of minerality are followed by hints of burnt caramel and a delicate nuttiness.

As the wine opens, the fruit becomes more expressive, revealing crisp green apple and ripe white peach.

On the palate, the wine is vibrant and refreshing.

High acidity gives it plenty of energy, keeping the oak firmly in the background.

Green apple is the dominant flavour, joined by citrus and stone fruit that add brightness without becoming overly ripe.

Despite being medium-bodied, the wine never feels heavy.

Instead, it has a clean, focused style that makes each sip feel fresh.

The balance between fruit, acidity and oak is well executed, allowing the Chardonnay to remain elegant rather than rich.

The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of peach and a pleasant mineral character that encourages another sip.

There is enough complexity here to reward slow tasting, with different aromas and flavours appearing as the wine warms in the glass.

This is not a Chardonnay I would open without food.

Its bright acidity and structured style really call for a meal.

It would pair beautifully with roast chicken, grilled salmon, halibut, creamy mushroom risotto or pork with a buttery sauce.

The freshness also makes it an excellent match for seafood in cream-based dishes, where the acidity can cut through the richness.

I scored the Hester Creek Chardonnay 2023 86 points.

It is a well-made, food-friendly Chardonnay that leans towards elegance rather than power.

If you enjoy fresh, balanced Chardonnays with restrained oak and plenty of natural acidity, this bottle is well worth seeking out.
