Okanagan Falls – One of Okanagan's Most Exciting Wine Destinations

Driving north from Oliver toward Penticton, the landscape changes dramatically as you pass Vaseux Lake and enter one of the most beautiful stretches of the South Okanagan.

Towering above the highway is McIntyre Bluff, a spectacular cliff formation shaped by the retreat of massive glaciers thousands of years ago.

The road winds through a valley carved by the Ice Age, where rocky cliffs, lakes and vineyards create a landscape unlike anywhere else in British Columbia.

At the southern end of Skaha Lake lies Okanagan Falls, often simply called "OK Falls" by locals.

The community takes its name from a series of small waterfalls that once existed on the Okanagan River at the outlet of Skaha Lake.

Those falls disappeared when water levels rose following the construction of a control dam on the river, but the name remains a reminder of the area's history.

Today, Okanagan Falls is a small, welcoming town surrounded by rolling hills, forests, dramatic rock formations and sparkling lakes.

The sunlight reflects off the water, helping to moderate temperatures in the vineyards and creating ideal growing conditions for wine grapes.

What makes Okanagan Falls particularly special is its unique terroir.

The region sits between Vaseux Lake and Skaha Lake, where water, elevation and ancient glacial soils combine to create a remarkably diverse wine-growing environment.

Warm, sunny days are balanced by cool nights, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and acidity.

The nearby lakes help moderate temperature extremes, while airflow from the surrounding cliffs and hills reduces disease pressure and creates excellent conditions for premium wine production.

In 2018, Okanagan Falls received official recognition as its own Sub-Geographical Indication (Sub-GI), acknowledging the area's distinctive soils, climate and growing conditions.

The region's vineyards generally sit between 400 and 500 metres above sea level on glacially formed soils that provide excellent drainage and complexity.

Wine lovers will find an impressive concentration of wineries here.

Some of the best-known names include See Ya Later Ranch, Stag's Hollow Winery, Noble Ridge Vineyard & Winery, Blasted Church Vineyards, Liquidity Wines, Meyer Family Vineyards, Wild Goose Winery, Painted Rock Estate Winery, Bonamici Cellars, Uppercase Winery and Nighthawk Vineyards.

The area has earned a reputation for producing some of the Okanagan's finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Several wineries, especially Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery, have built their reputation on Burgundian-inspired wines that showcase elegance, freshness and a strong sense of place.

At the same time, the warmer benchlands and south-facing slopes surrounding Skaha Lake are capable of ripening Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Some of the region's most acclaimed wineries produce complex Meritage-style blends that rival some of the best red wines in Canada.

Painted Rock, located on the eastern shore of Skaha Lake, has become particularly well known for its Bordeaux-inspired wines grown on a unique west-facing bench overlooking the lake.

Higher-elevation vineyards contribute another dimension.

See Ya Later Ranch, for example, sits nearly 600 meters above sea level and benefits from warm days, cool evenings and a long growing season that is particularly well suited for Riesling, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer.

Beyond wine, Okanagan Falls offers plenty of reasons to stay awhile.

Hiking, cycling, kayaking, fishing, swimming and birdwatching are all popular activities.

Nearby attractions such as Vaseux Lake, Skaha Lake, Peach Cliff, Mahoney Lake and the surrounding nature reserves showcase some of the South Okanagan's most remarkable scenery.

Okanagan Falls may be small, but it delivers an impressive combination of natural beauty, diverse terroir and outstanding wineries.

Whether you come for a weekend of wine tasting, outdoor adventure or simply to enjoy the spectacular scenery, this charming corner of the South Okanagan is one of British Columbia's most rewarding wine destinations.
