Hester Creek Viognier 2023

There is always a risk with Viognier.

Too often, the variety leans into excess, overly floral aromatics, heavy texture, soft acidity, and a finish that feels broad rather than precise.

Either excess, or too flabby, too boring, a water-like resemblance of a wine.

The 2023 Hester Creek Viognier takes a different route, focusing on freshness, balance, and restraint instead of power.

From the first pour, the wine opens with lifted aromas of honeydew melon, white blossoms, and delicate stone fruit.

The aromatics are expressive without becoming perfumed, allowing the fruit character to stay clean and defined.

Subtle notes of apricot and peach emerge gradually, supported by a floral edge that feels polished rather than aggressive.

What makes this vintage stand out is its structure.

A whole-cluster press combined with an extended 27-day cold fermentation preserves acidity and sharpens the wine’s overall precision.

Instead of the oily texture commonly associated with Viognier, this wine remains light and energetic across the palate.

The acidity carries the fruit beautifully, giving the wine movement and tension from start to finish.

The finish lingers with a gentle touch of acacia honey, adding softness without pushing the wine toward sweetness.

That final note rounds out the experience while still allowing the mineral freshness and clean style to dominate.

Hester Creek has produced a Viognier that feels modern and composed, aromatic enough to satisfy fans of the variety, but restrained enough to appeal to drinkers who usually avoid heavier expressions.

It is a balanced, food-friendly white that succeeds through elegance rather than intensity.
