My first winery in Oliver—right there on Black Sage Road, the first stop when you head out from town.

I remember that first visit so vividly, even though it was over a decade ago.

It was just the two of us, rolling in on our bikes, completely overheated, sweaty, and gasping for air after that long, sun-drenched ride. Not another soul in sight.

The tasting room was quiet, almost still—but in the best way. Cool, calm, and immediately welcoming, like it was inviting us to slow down and stay a while.

And we did.

There was something about the place that just settled us.

Maybe it was the contrast from the heat outside, or maybe it was the unmistakable charm of a winery rooted in Portuguese heritage—“Quinta,” meaning a wine estate, paired with the name Ferreira, after its founder, John Ferreira, who we would only meet years later.

But that first tasting? That’s what hooked us.

We fell hard for their oaked Chardonnay.

It had this beautiful balance—lively and fresh, yet layered with enough complexity to make you pause and really pay attention.

We bought a bottle, took it out to the patio, and just sat there, letting the moment stretch. Sipping, breathing, recovering.

It felt like the kind of wine you don’t rush, and the kind of place you don’t forget.

And we didn’t.

Years later, meeting John Ferreira himself made the story even richer.

A Portuguese immigrant who first came to Oliver to grow fruit on that very land—only to eventually follow his instincts (and his roots) and transform the orchard into a vineyard.

Starting with Merlot and Chardonnay, he built something that feels deeply personal, not just agricultural.

That’s what makes this place special. It’s not just the wines—though they’re consistently beautiful. It’s the feeling.

The warmth of the family, the genuine kindness, the sense that everyone here actually wants you to be there.

There’s art, there are stories, there’s laughter… and yes, there are pastel de nata that you absolutely shouldn’t skip.

It’s one of those rare places that manages to stay with you long after you’ve left.

And somehow, every time you return, it feels just as memorable as that very first visit.
